“The Future is Plastics, Son”.
For the youth of the 1960s – and still today – “Plastic” meant fake, artificial, & unnatural. The statement “The future is plastics” was code for all the things that needed to be changed. The older man in the movie thought he was providing good advice to the student, but the young audience took that as a statement for what NOT to do.
Isn’t it ironic that 50 years later we don’t prefer plastic jewelry and other “fake” possessions – but we’re still living with plastics EVERYWHERE.
The most easily seen environmental issue on this planet is the continuous use of plastics. Virtually all plastics come from fossil fuels, and they end up in landfills, or in the oceans, and everywhere else for hundreds – or even thousands – of years…
